We are expecting to see a prolonged stretch of unseasonable Hot weather as we enter into September. In a typical September we usually see about two 90 degree days. However, the forecast is calling for 7-10 days above 90 over the coming days.
Not only is this uncommon for September but also not typical even in the “heat” of our Summers. Our Oregon Rygrass is a cool season grass designed for our mild summers and cool wet winters. Though it can handle 3-4 day spikes, Rygrass will not tolerate extended heat and will begin to go dormant. Some common practices that we will be enacting to preserve our lawns over this stretch are:
• Checking and adjusting irrigation
• Mowing taller 3” or higher in some cases
• Increasing duration to 10-14 days between mows
• Providing recovery plans such as: - Fall Aeration, Overseed and Lime programs
